What is a Body Linguist?
Every human body we encounter speaks a unique language. We are not just chiseling away at a mound of flesh before us, reshaping it into our own mind's image of healing and wholeness. It’s not a one-way application of our own perceived expertise and skill. Our clients are whole people with a whole experience. That experience has value and should be centered as a tenet of our practice. We believe that every human being is born with the innate ability to perceive touch messages, to touch others with compassion and nurturing and achieve this every day with no professional training whatsoever. Everyone is a Body Linguist. The most powerful tool you possess as a professional is the ability to interpret the language of sensory experience from the human being on your table, under your hands. Each person is perfectly fluent in the perception of both their pain and their relief from it. It is our new responsibility to strive for fluency with the human in our care, not fluency in our own perceptions of what we do…. What we were taught. Where we feel most comfortable. In the last 50 years not one single method or modality has emerged as a provable, evidence-based gold standard approach that could hold up in a universal, professional massage framework. Our courses are client-centered and teach you to heavily draw on a communication and collaboration model of treatment where the person you are working with has agency to assist in their own outcome. Our courses will teach you to harness these classic techniques and then innovate with them in the moment for each individual client, rather than keeping narrow homage to any creator, guru, theory or principle. Your client’s voice is your teacher. Your entire skill-set past and present is your tool of translation. Our courses will provide you with a contemporary, evidence-based physiological narrative of current pain science and the role of the nervous system that is flexible, easy to understand and easy to share with your clients so that they can benefit and feel empowered in their own healing experience. Carmel Andrews LMT NCBTMB ~
As a practitioner and educator for the last 27 years, I have transformed my passion and excitement for grounded, efficient and client-centered bodywork into a contemporary offering that helps working therapists expand their client reach while also vastly improving their client outcomes. My background is diverse and encompasses clinical focus in pain management, international private practice and world-class spa leadership. Many years of core curriculum instruction for the massage field are brought together with my specialty knowledge and education to create course experiences that regard current evidence and bespoke technique applications as the future of bodywork professionals. My teaching specializations include Myofascial Release, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Ashiatsu (Barefoot Massage), Traditional Thai, Pre/Post-Natal Massage, Sports and Orthopedic Technique, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Deep Tissue and Injury/Surgical Rehab. All of my courses, while honoring traditional roots are formatted to integrate current understandings of the pain experience, psychosocial interplay and physiological evidence with technique refinement for the modern practice. Each student in my course receives not only a modern tool-set but also a personal evaluation of how those tools will work with what they are currently achieving with their clients. I hold Board Certification in the United States through NCBTMB and I am a member of AMTA, ABMP, AMTE and COMTA. I am also professionally licensed in Hawaii, Texas and Washington to practice and teach Massage Therapy. I am the current owner and Principal of Maui Academy of Healing Arts located in Maui, Hawaii. The school was founded in 1988 and is the oldest operating school in Hawaii, teaching students from all around the world in foundational massage education. In 2023 I founded “The Body Linguist” which is a series of continuing education course offerings that elevate our fluency of traditional therapeutic modalities. Giving the historical techniques of our profession and the practitioners who perform them the upgrades they need to reach a wider audience and take outcomes to a higher future. As a life-long student myself I am deeply fulfilled by engaging with learners in their transformation to be more confident and compassionate bodyworkers. Loving and being present for those I serve is the most important part of this work and sharing that with my students is the very best part of my practice!
